setting in which to leam about familiar garden plants.The Backyard Discovery Gardensare sprinkled with familiar backyard icons,from traditional picket fence and garden fumishingsto a"playhouse fort"setting the backdrop for exploring the wonders of plants.The secondexperience emphasizes the"wild"where plants are observed in their natural emvironment.TheAdventure Woods highlight vanous natural ervirorments,demonstrating the simlar qualitiesamong plants and the habitat they create for animals.In this natural setting.children can goon a free ranging expedition into woods,wetlands,and meadows.After retuming from theiradventures,children can further explore topics that piqued their interest at the Field Station orn the Backyard Discovery Gardens.This strategy ofleading children from ORGANIZATIONOrganization of the plan is strongly influenced by the"L"shaped border of mature trees at theupper level of the south and east edges of the site.Except for a small grove of spruce trees nearthe center of the site,these are the only large trees on site.They provide the essential existingenvironment upon which to develop the forest experience in Adventure Woods.The site is regraded into a lower bowl and an upper terrace.This coneept overeomes theproblematic sloping nature of the existing site,its vertical distance of 24'.the lack of definition tothe north and west,and the general lack of interesting terrain.The small grove of spruce is on a high point and helps to mark the perceived centroid of the site.The Central Lawn and Field Station (with its necessary facilities)are located here and provide thenterface between the familiar,residential landscape of the Backyard Discovery Gardens in thebowl and the unfamiliar,wild landscape of Adventure Woods on the upper terrace.The Garden Entrance is located just off a hub-like plaza connecting to the planned Maze andArbor Court.The garden entry walk leads to the Central Plaza,which allows families to
