AbstractFictionalizing city aims to talk about the city in context of structurallanguage. It even transgresses the layer of language and returns back to thereality. In other words,it is the inconsideration of the inconsiderate urbandesign in the past.Due to this theory,we come to realize that urban designassociates itself closely with every possible user through an architecturallanguage rather than an instrumental language.Because few can ultimately gobeyond language to develop a deep insight towards Being,or rather themeaning system of the language of urban architecture,it intends to prepare foran urban design all the possible means. If we cannot sketch an outline of anindividual theory,at least we may propose a technique for urban design.Weshould make sure what lies essential in fictionalizing city are the semiotic signsand symbols which can hardly distinguish real case from thought.Thenheading for language will lead to a thoroughgoing criticism on urban designand at the same time brings about emancipation for it.What are the effects on the reflections on urban design today?1.Contract purposefully the range of research:we are to confine our topic tocity only and succeed to define urban architecture without any otherinfluences except the reference to linguistics and semiotics.City lies in thepature of language;therefore,I claim it a shift of urban research to linguisticswhich is the main topic first half of my paper. If we take language for tooland modification in the past, then today we come to regard it as symbols orreality. It is at this point that we make a parallel study on philosophy, humane studies, literature, art and urban architecture at the root of language. All the above mentioned are undergoing a re-evaluation in 20h century, which provides spiritual atmosphere for the shift of urban architecture tolinguistics.2.Adopting a linguistic point of view in the field of urban architecture:We donot mean to eliminate the ambiguity of architectural language. On thecontrary,we are rather intending to understand and establish this ambiguityand move on to seek for a structure to formulate this ambiguity and formalize蜀素前网Z.JZC.WET the thoughts of semiotics. That's what I will dwell on in the second half ofmy paper-the labyrinth, the labyrinth is the mix-together of pluralisticlanguage in urban structure. It implies all the questions, which we can hardlyfind any solution in architectural dictionary, thus it becomes a pattern eachcity once achieved or is rejecting.3.Treating city as a linguistic antity means that we have abandoned the theoryof development of urban history and shift to the discussion about the varyingtheory of rhetoric, about the alternative between real object and itsconstructive possibility. The real structural theory does not restrict it topic to'initiator'only. Therefore,we are more likely to conduct a re-evaluationabout the classical urban architecture of China.Pluralistic interpretationgives birth to the openness of the stale ancient city and meantime inducesnew elaboration in the course of re-interpretation it became useless, died in ahistory fact and is presenting itself in the moving anthropological fact, because no historical view can fully convey the meaning of it.Therefore, wedepart from the linearly flowing time return to city itself in the meaning ofanthropology with 'ordinary constructive units 'which in the meaning oftopology, are freely stretching and contracting in modulus and smoothlysliding in time,It generally refers to Levi-Strauss's anthropologytransformed from structural linguistics. As the theme of non-history.Here thetheoretical language as ism'will appear pale and aimless, withholding anintense to make a thorough evaluation about the existential language of city.4.If the change of language and classification means a revolution of languageto a city, then the real linguistic criticism is not to judge or criticize but ratherto devote itself to the city without any pretext so as to differentiate, recognizeand cut it into half with a position of presence'.Seeking for structureessentially is the process of designing. This paper, without any stylisticarrangement, will initiate design from the very beginning of reading.Withdescription of a kind of 'inner experience'of city, this design haspracticability and the eventual return to real city lies in a pure designingprocess without any pretexts, presupposed approaches or an unification inmethods.Theorists, architects and urban residents are situated in the equallytough circumstance.Their sole barrier to the returning to existence and theirfinal target is to explain the city's language. The third chapter of my secondhalf aims to provide an alternative dramatic mode of language for the sake ofdenying and challenging;the theatre of emptiness, the place of eventhappening, the 'inner experience'of city beyond any description.Just asRoland-Barthes once said:"There is something in come for any language, nomatter it is fictitious, poetic or conversational, for from now on it becomesthe reality of language itself."蜀素前网Z.JZC.WET 5.The abandon of classification in this paper eliminates the apparentdifferentiation between architects, designers and artisans.Only theconstruction of city's own will leave. Then a dreamer and constructor of thiscity in fiction will concentrate on the architectural language of city.He mayachieve a deeper sense of the profundity of urban architectural language andthe paradox of multimeaning rather than its instrumental fiction and beauty. It starts from the minimal unit, with no aim to develop, expand and frame aunified structure.Quite oppositely,it aims for a fragmentational weighingand deliberation which is insuccessive, indefinite and indirctional. It isobvious that this style of urban design belongs to the category of linguistics, moreover,it is the ultimate challenge for the separate classified and definitearchitectural terms, which will be commented in Chapter 4 of my second half.6.What's the social value of the research?I do not mean to make a decision anarchitect only provides a hypothesed fictitious model with no intention todecide, hence the purity of its indefiniteness.Although this nonjudgmentalvalue can hardly be accepted by the traditional theory and thought,I am firmin the belief that only talking about the architectural language of city bymeans of linguistic approach can a maximal reality consistent with city beduly evoked.Activate existence, evoke existence, and advance towardsexistence, all for existence! What we are critizining is language itself andurban architecture itself. It's value hies in its indefinite form, its conditionsetting aside for spontaneousness, nonauthority and the minimai constructiveunits. The case is same with language in its order, systematic, destructive, open and playful nature, which is an unrestrictivnal indulgence decided by acertain restriction. We are not concern with the form or functionidentification.Instead,we show much concern for the possibility of urbanarchitecture its own and the ambiguity and openness of its language.Theyare dissolving the popular massive structure with a modest power having noconnection with form or scale.Frankly speaking,I favored almostinstinctively the dense group of small buildings and small scale. Those weak, unauthorative, alien and deserted tiny things with their faithful loyalty to lifeinduce from me a new approach to observe city and its construction.I takeno hesitation to stand with the unauthorative textual design, imagine andexperiment the commonness in the different small units which are strict, inexccesive and unauthorative--This is an ideal,an ideal every city ofChina in the early 21s century regained. However,it sounds a little bitpassives. The old Chinese saying 'following its own ways'itself isdissolvable;it implies self-dissolution and self-emancipation of the inactiveexistence. In a period when various positive factors contribute to make dailylife systematic, specialized, strict and completely different,it is inevitable for蜀素衬网Z.ZS沁.ET us to strike to a position of dissolution and to explore what is the designinglanguage of Chinese city.Enhancing existence in city and guarding itsfreedom are the real value of fictionalizing a city'.There is another thing I want to mention,in this paper,I frequently use theexpressions like 'personally',I',and 'I prefer',which may cause amisunderstanding that fictionalizing city'is merely out of my individualinterest. As a matter of fact,'I'stands as a refute to the 'individual'theory ofphilosophy in the past.'I'is a mark, challenging the belief which regardhuman being as an abstract existence and disagreeing with the so-called'spiritual architecture'.It sticks to a pure individual experience of a city on thebase of nature intending for a certain collectivity.'I'is only a living componentof the total structure of a city.As far as my paper itself is concerned,I insist:the tentative opennesscomes out with sign of imperfection, because it has no former experience toborrow and no certain method to follow. Its difficulty lies in its initiation. Therefore,it is not important what the conclusion is,what stands significant isthe action has been taken.Surely, once it starts,it will not stop trying.4蜀素前网沁
